Indian smartphone users will soon have the facilities of indigenous GPS Navic. According to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), talks are ongoing on ISRO and Chinese company Xiaomi‘s Navigator (NaVIC) chipset, which is currently in the final stages.
NaVIC is the Indian version of the Global Positioning System (GPS).
NaVIC is an abbreviation for Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).
ISRO said that the Sailor Friendly Chipset is being manufactured by US manufacturing company Qualcomm. This will not only give accurate information about the location to Indian users but will also give the exact geographical location of the area within the range of 1500 km adjacent to the Indian border.
According to ISRO, Qualcomm has announced that its chipset has also added the feature of navigator and will release it soon. Qualcomm has partnered with Xiaomi for this particular chipset. Soon, Xiaomi Sailor will launch a smartphone equipped with the chipset in the Indian market.
NaVIC is an abbreviation for Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). According to ISRO, IRNSS is designed for integration with mobile phones including terrestrial, air and sea navigation, disaster management, vehicle tracking, and fleet management.
It provides standard positioning service (SPS) and restricted service to all users, which is available only as an encrypted service to authorized users. IRNSS is known to provide accurate position information but also provides better information of 20 meters area of the primary service area.
