Apple Boosts ‘Make in India’ Initiative: iPhone 17 Production Shifts, Tata’s Role in Apple’s Future

Apple is doubling down on its ‘Make in India’ initiative, with exciting developments that promise to reshape the tech landscape. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shared fascinating insights into Apple’s plans, indicating a significant shift in production strategies and a growing role for Indian manufacturers in Apple’s global operations.

Production Shift to India

Apple’s plans to ramp up iPhone production in India are nothing short of ambitious. The Cupertino giant is set to increase the proportion of iPhone units manufactured in India, marking a significant departure from its traditional reliance on Chinese manufacturing. This shift is in line with Apple’s strategy to diversify its production base while capitalizing on India’s burgeoning tech ecosystem.

iPhone 17: Made in India

One of the most exciting revelations is that Apple is gearing up to develop the iPhone 17 outside China. The new product introduction (NPI) process for the iPhone 17 is slated to begin in India during the second half of 2024. This move not only signals Apple’s confidence in India’s capabilities but also positions the country as a significant contributor to the global iPhone supply chain. The iPhone 17 is expected to debut in markets worldwide in the second half of 2025, marking a significant milestone in Apple’s manufacturing history.

Foxconn’s Transition

Apple assembler Foxconn, which currently dominates nearly 80 percent of iPhone production lines in India, is undergoing a strategic shift. Foxconn’s production scale in two key regions in China is set to decrease notably in 2024. In particular, a production reduction of up to 45 percent in Zhengzhou and 85 percent in Taiyuan is on the horizon. This transition reinforces the importance of India as a growing hub for Apple’s manufacturing needs.

Growing Indian Presence

Apple’s focus on India is further underlined by its partnership with Tata Electronics. Last week, Tata acquired a 100 percent indirect stake in Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing for approximately $125 million. This acquisition positions Tata as the first Indian firm to assemble Apple’s iPhone models within the country. The move is expected to strengthen Apple’s relationship with the Indian government and enhance its growth prospects over the next decade. Tata Electronics will join Pegatron and Foxconn in producing current iPhone models, marking a pivotal moment for the Indian tech industry.

Conclusion

Apple’s plans to expand iPhone production in India and develop the iPhone 17 outside China signify a transformative shift in the world of tech manufacturing. India’s rapidly growing tech ecosystem is becoming a cornerstone of Apple’s global strategy, with the country poised to play a central role in the iPhone supply chain. As these developments unfold, the ‘Make in India’ initiative is set to elevate the nation’s prominence on the global tech stage, fostering a stronger partnership between Apple and Indian manufacturers.
